Inter-Regionals
Overview
The Inter-Regional tournament is Petanque England’s biggest annual competition and is the highlight of the Petanque year for many PE members. All English regions receive an invite, along with, space permitting, Wales and Scotland (since 2024).
The tournament comprises three competitions: Championship, Challenge, and Juniors. Within each competition, depending on the number of entries, there are one or two divisions. Each division, again depending on entries, may comprise 6, 8, or 10 squads. Each Championship squad consists of 8 teams, Challenge squads have 4 teams, and a Junior squad has a single team. Whilst the teams are triples, each team may contain 3 or 4 players.
Within a Region squad, each team is ranked and plays against equally-ranked teams from all other Regions in their division. The Championship and Challenge play their opposite numbers on Saturday and then on Sunday have a crossover where team 1 plays team 2, team 3 plays team 4, and so on.
The English Petanque Association became Petanque England in 2018 and in 2019 the President’s Cup was introduced. This aggregates the scores of all of a Region’s teams – Championship, Challenge, and Juniors – to find the overall best-performing region.
For completeness, where results are available pre-2019, the Presidents Cup has been retrospectively generated. However, this is for reference/interest only.
Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the 2020 Inter-Regionals were not contested.
